Hi, my name is Jesalyn Claeys. In the fall, I will start my senior year at Mechanicville Jr./Sr. High School. Mechanicville Jr./Sr. High School is a small school with 640 total students. Currently, I am valedictorian of the graduating class of 2014. Being from a small school gave me the opportunity to be chosen to participate in a sustainable energies program.
Energy and sustainability became near and dear to me this past school year when I entered a school program based on clean technologies and sustainable industries. My mom jokes that she never saw me as a tree hugger, but I certainly am one now! There are a handful of reasons why I am interested in energy and sustainability. I’ve always known that I wanted to make a difference. I want to know that I’ve done something important. Helping to preserve the environment, be it by making something more sustainable, encouraging energy conservation, or any other environmentally-friendly action, is definitely important! I also believe sustainability in particular is going to become even more important in the future. Because I’m most interested in sustainability, I plan to discuss that in my writing.
There are many ways one can make a difference. I participate in coaching and refereeing for our local youth soccer program; here I can make a difference in the younger generation. I am involved in the youth council, helping our community. I have volunteered with STEM enrichment programs. Within the school, I tutor students, both inside and outside of the school day. Finally, for the last six years I have been class treasurer. These are some of the ways I have made a difference in and around my community.
Have I mentioned I love to travel? Traveling is one of my favorite hobbies. I find it fascinating to see other locations and their cultures. Besides traveling I enjoy soccer, which is why I coach, referee and play. Finally, my last hobby would be reading. I find myself easily lost in good books.
After senior year, I plan to go to college and focus on engineering and sustainability. As of right now, SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry is my top pick. However, whatever college I end up attending must be as dedicated to the environment and making a difference as I am because those are two values I don’t want to compromise.
